Workshop fees may be paid directly by the school. Alternatively, funding is available through the City and County of Honolulu's Recycling Teaching Partners (RTP) program (indicated below by "*"), or through Kokua Hawaii Foundation's Environmental Education Mini Grants program. G.E. tax will be added to workshop price when billed.

Eco-Awareness
Students will explore their connection to nature and the link between individual actions and their global affect through a series of eco-games. Students will consider their ecological footprint, participate in a life cycle scavenger hunt, create a trash timeline and do a mini waste audit of their trash, while learning how to become better stewards of the 'aina. We will reconsider what we think of as trash, and explore the true meaning of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Garbology: Waste Audit
Let's dive deeper into the waste stream. Students will perform a "waste audit" for either the school's green waste or mixed material waste to discover the actual quantity of valuable resources that are sent to the landfill every day! We will assist in the creation of a school-wide comprehensive plan to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle the school's green waste or mixed material waste.

Garden I: Garden Building
Need help getting a garden started? The Green House has the expertise and the resources you need! In this workshop we will work with your class to prepare an area of your school grounds for planting, and discuss the importance of growing more of our own food. Cost includes seeds and soil amendments. The Green House will provide tools for use during garden installation.

Garden II: Seeds, Sprouts, and Planting
Let's get growing! Students will learn about seeds and sprouting, and plant seeds and seedlings in your garden. This workshop is also available to schools that already have a garden area but would like help with planting and lessons on seeds.

Worms I: Build a Bin*
Worms turn organic "waste" into the best natural fertilizer for plants! Learn about composting worms and how to care for them, and build your own worm "habitat" from recycled items for your classroom. Students will rave about this first hand (and sometimes first ever) experience with worms! Cost includes worms for classroom bin.

Worms II: Bin Checkup and Harvest*
We'll show you how to harvest your vermicast to use in your garden, or sell for a school fundraiser! You will also learn more about the other "critters" that live in your bin. This check up will help you keep your worms healthy and happy. Worms can also be taken home (with parents' permission).

Compost I: Build a Compost Pile*
Compost is nature's way of recycling! Learn how to turn food and yard "waste" into beautiful soil for your gardens and potted plants. Highly recommended as a compliment to gardens at your school. Compost piles take about four months until they're ready so plan accordingly.

Compost II: Compost Pile Checkup and Harvest*
Once your compost pile is ready to harvest, we'll come and show you how. We'll demonstrate how to build a screen out of recycled materials to harvest your compost, make compost "tea", discuss the "critters" you will find in your pile and perform a system "check up" to keep you composting!

Butterfly Garden
Explore the importance of pollinators, their life cycle, what they eat and how to care for them. Watch a caterpillar turn into a butterfly and plant a flower garden to help butterflies survive! Cost includes seeds and soil amendments for your butterfly garden. The Green House will provide tools for use during garden installation.

The Food Cycle
Cooking I: Healthy Bodies, Healthy Planet
Our food choices have a profound impact on the environment. In this hands-on cooking class students will experience the joys of creating and enjoying a healthful meal while learning about the importance of eating local, organic, and waste-free! We'll discuss ways to reduce waste by avoiding food packaging and composting our scraps with worms and compost piles. All supplies and equipment provided.

Cooking II: Your Dream Theme
Are you studying Hawaiian culture or the food web? Environmental studies or Spanish language? Create a meaningful and memorable experience for students with this hands-on cooking (and eating!) class, tailored to any subject of study. As always we will discuss ways to reduce waste by making appropriate food choices like composting with worms and compost piles and avoiding excess packaging. Ka Wai Ola
Water Catchment
This course covers the unique water cycle of the Hawaiian Islands and our role in it. During the first lesson students will learn about conservation and water catchment techniques and gain a deeper understanding of this precious natural resource. We will also determine an appropriate location for a rainbarrel catchment system on campus. During the second lesson we will construct and install a 55-gallon water catchment tank using 95% recycled materials.

Ancient Arts
Papermaking from Plants
Students will make paper using tropical plants and recycled paper. Each step in fiber preparation of plants -- harvesting, beating, cooking and sheet formation -- will be covered, providing a full comprehension of papermaking from "seed to sheet."

Natural Dyes for Printing
We will explore the making of natural dyes using methods of our Hawaiian ancestors. Students will use recycled items to create their own stamp and print designs and patterns.1 - 90 minute lesson for grades 3-12

ECO-T's
Abracadabra! With a little imagination and a few simple tools, students will transform old T-shirts into one-of-a-kind reusable bags. Students will learn the impact of a simple T-shirt on the environment and the importance of reusing these valuable resources.

Let's get creative with trash! We'll make one-of-a-kind gifts using non-recyclable trash items and help to instill the value of "waste-free" green giving in students.

Solar Power Model Car
Students will explore the power of the sun and create a mini solar powered car using recycled items. To test their designs students will get to race their cars and discuss design modifications.
